Todd Knapp - Drummer, Percussionist and Teacher

Born near Toronto, Canada, Todd now makes his home in the UK. Drums were part of Todd's life from before he can remember. His father was a fine journeyman drummer and percussionist who exposed Todd to a wealth of sights and sounds that form the backbone of Todd's approach as a player to this day. Since his first professional gig at 15, the past 20 years of playing have taken Todd all across the globe; performing in the West End, with national touring musicals, on cruise ships and in countless pubs and clubs.

Todd has had the great privilege to perform with The Shirelles, Johnny Thunder of The Drifters, vocalist Franc D'Ambrosio, trumpeter Cecil Welch, the multi-talented John Davidson, and more. Musical theatre appearances include Dancing Shoes: The George Best Story on tour, the acclaimed End of the Rainbow at Trafalgar Studios; Spamalot on tour; The Rat Pack on tour and at the Adelphi Theatre; The Masters of The House w. Nicholas Parsons; the Victoria Wood comedy Talent at the Menier Chocolate Factory; Eyebrow Productions' Me and My Girl (2008) and Crazy For You (2009); and many other musicals both in the UK and Canada. In a pop context, Todd has recorded and/or performed with Toronto's Beneath Augusta (Aporia Records) and vocalist Dylan Bell. TV appearances include the CBC showcase Up and Coming with jazz quintet Side Be at the age of 15. He has also performed with many other ensembles in Canada and the UK.

Along the way, Todd has learned - and continues to learn - from many excellent teachers. Through example, guidance and well-worn copies of Stick Control and Syncopation his father laid the foundation for later studies with Lou Williamson Jr. (Canadian Forces School of Music), Canadian jazz greats Barry Elmes and Bob Maclaren, Pat Petrillo (Hands, Grooves & Fills), Ray Reilly (Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Royal Winnipeg Ballet), and the inimitable Jim Blackley (Syncopated Rolls for the Modern Drummer, The Essence of Jazz Drumming). Todd passes on the wisdom of these fine teachers and his own diverse experience in private lessons and masterclasses.
